Vestry

The Current St. Stephen’s Vestry Leadership

The Vestry’s Responsibilities

Members of the vestry are legal in the congregation. The work of the Vestry has two faces: leadership and Management. As a vestry member you are expected to manage and lead.
Management includes such tasks as budgeting, establishing and enforcing policies and procedures, establishing action plans, maintaining property.
Leadership includes such tasks as: articulating and communicating the vision of the future of the parish, generating enthusiasm and “buy-in” from the congregation, setting the tone for leadership by acting responsibly for the good of the congregation so that other leaders in the congregation are encouraged to grow and flourish.

The Vestry’s Role

The role of the vestry is defined by the By-Laws of the St. Stephen Episcopal Church as follows:
1.The administration and management of the parish is carried out by the vestry.
2.The vestry has a responsibility to manage the finances, building and grounds and provides leadership in consultations with parish’s organizations or leaders to ensure the smooth and effective running
of the parish.
In their capacity as legal representatives and agents of the parish ,vestries must be aware of their ongoing responsibilities and potential liabilities. Vestries and parishes can held liable for any of the following:
1. Accidents and other incidents occurring on parish property or during parish sponsored activities.
2. Violations of contracts, leases or other legal agreements.
3. Wrongful termination and other employment practices.
4. Sexual harassment and misconduct.
Support of the Rector and clergy is another important role of the vestry. This role includes activities such as:
1. Setting meetings to engage in open and honest conversation about what is and is not going well in the congregation.
2. Paying attention to clergy wellness issues.
3. Encouraging clear and direct communication between the congregation, the vestry and the Rector.
